biography
Somewhere
between uplifting and heartbreaking, Kelsey Rottiers’ fresh and
real compositions bring a new perspective to the concept of
forgiveness. With lyrics born out of vulnerability and strength,
songs like “In the Rising Tide” echo “I’ll be wading in the
water” with the audience lifting their voices together like a church choir. Kelsey
Rottiers' music merges folk and indie
sustenance with pop simplicity that will be imprinted in your mind like a
brilliant sunset.
With eleven years of training under her belt after graduating from the Contemporary Music Center on Martha's Vineyard and receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Music at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kelsey was joined by Derek Turcsanyi (guitarist, back-up singer, choir member, idea man) in 2009. Although there have been a few other rotating musicians on bass and drums since, The Rising Tide has become more of a concept than a traditional band. Whether solo, duo, or full band, the original style and honesty breeds music with hope and forgiveness.
In the summer of 2011, after getting married to James Pray (Author and Technical Writer), Kelsey Rottiers (Kelsey Pray) started focusing full-time on music and expanding her network of support with Jason Kotarski (booking agent and friend), and Aaron McWilliams (Music Broker). Kelsey says, "I'm excited to see not only a fan base start to grow, but also a team of supporters who enjoy the music and want to see it succeed as much as I do!"
Along with expanding the network and support team, Kelsey started selling bracelets for The Red Thread Movement. This is a company that rescues young women and girls from the sex trafficking industry in India and Nepal. Between this one border there are 12,000 girls, the average age of 12 years old, who are trafficked every year and forced into sexual slavery. The Red Thread Movement has been fighting against this by not only rescuing these victims, but putting them in a safe house where they will receive counseling, vocational training, and the chance to start a new life. To support The Red Thread Movement, you can visit their website redthreadmovement.org and learn more about ways to help, or you can come to a show and purchase a $3 bracelet to help raise awareness. For just $3, you are helping this company rescue 3 girls a day!
In 2010 "Red Wonder Boots," was placed among the top 500 songs in the world in a Billboard Songwriting Contest. And finally, on March 26th, 2011 they released their first full length album, and have since caught the attention from the Grand Rapids Press for some reviews, and various Michigan venues. Performing songs from the album in venues like The Ark, for the Riverfolk songwriting contest, The St Cecilia Music Center, for the ArtPrize, and winning the local spot at the Dow Event Center for the Rock and Worship Roadshow.
After much success with a wide range audiences, Kelsey and her team of supporters and friends are making plans for 2012 that include touring and recording another album!
